Screenplays?

Is anybody into writing screenplays? The painstaking rules and formats, all for very little pay-off, or, if you’re special and got you’re shit together, just enough pay-off that other people may just know what schizophrenic shit you’re talking about- from a visual perspective, I mean.

CAT HISSING, UNKNOWN OBJECT FALLING
ENTER DANNY RITTER, a tall and blonde teenaged boy. He momentarily kisses the purring PERSIAN CAT on the head (flash to Danny’s bright blue eyes, then down to cat’s), and lets cat jump from his arms onto a table.

DANNY
Sit still, Jesus. Maybe I’ll feed you.
Despite threats, the boy lovingly sets a bowl of food on center kitchen table, scratching cat’s head

SCENE 2

CAT MEOWS IN APOLOGY
DANNY
It’s alright, Penelope. You were close this time. One day we’ll show Dad.
DANNY continues making a pot of coffee, and the morning news is indistinctly shown and heard playing on a small TV set on a barstool in the corner.
(C.U.) picture on FRIDGE of a smiling blonde woman. The subtitle under photo reads MARIA- 2000. Cut back to DANNY.
Silently, DANNY retreats from KITCHEN with Penelope tucked in his arms. As DANNY reaches for the staircase banister (of which a few rungs are already missing), he misses his step when the bottom banister wobbles erratically. DANNY swears indistinctly in German, stomping up the staircase and carrying the bottom rung under his arm.

SCENE 3
INT. DANNY’S ROOM – CONTINUOUS
FADE IN on sunlight coming through window. Sun shines through multiple windows in an unlit room. Panning room, there is a MATTRESS in a corner and a TARP covering the floor. On top of the tarp is an artist’s EASEL, and propped against the wall are several PAINTINGS and DRAWINGS.
DANNY is seen in JEANS and SHIRTLESS, a PAINT STREAK on his chest. He holds a paintbrush in one hand but smudges paint with his fingers, then sneezes, turning away from the camera, (C.U. on belt burn on DANNY’S back) and rubs his nose with painted hand.
DANNY
Oh. Shit. Dumbass.
DANNY rolls his eyes and continues painting. Camera zoom to unfinished PAINTING of a GIRL with GREEN EYES and BLACK HAIR.

(phone rings)
DANNY
(exhaustedly)
It’s my day off, what?
(First words of other speaker are indistinct)
DANNY
Yeah, but I’m not bringing them to you
(O.S.) IAN
Goddamnit, I need them to practice for the school concert, though! You are so not helping! I’ll drive over and pick them up, even. It’s not like you have to wear anything special for me.
DANNY
(sarcastically)
Oh, but I’m all painted already!
IAN
Fuck you.
DANNY
Suck it.
IAN
Dave says hi, too. And we’ll bring lunch. Is Burger Queer fine?
DANNY
(laughing)
Ha! It’ll be as limp and faggy as you!

(V.O.) Loud phone disconnection

DANNY
(to himself)
Eh, I guess I’ll keep them around

(O.S.) Returns to painting (C.U. on half-finished painting, DANNY’S arm and paintbrush visible)

DANNY (O.S.)
(muted ring)
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy………when skies are……grey………you’ll never know (beat) dear……how much (fade out)
